    They ahev appeared in norse mithology since the days before Christianity. Bad and ugly they are bent only on evil and distruction... Or are they? ...

    and one I hadn't previously considered. Just how big were the Trolls? I always have seen them in my mind's eye as about the size of an upright grizzly or polar bear, or maybe a sasquatch... you know, large enough to inspire total terror up close, but not so large as to seem unbeatable, if you know what I mean.

    What is interesting to me is that, in 'The Hobbit', goblins are described as having a king, a land of their own, and some skill in the making of machinery, etc., but in LOTR, the Orcs, into whom the goblins seem to have evolved in JRR's creative imagination, seem to be little better than zombie-like slaves of Saruman and Sauron, with the most disgusting of dining preferences. Any thoughts on that one?
