One thing you might want to keep in mind is this. No warrior worth his/her salt would throw away a weapon if it was in good shape and serviceable. So, odds are the Germanic tribes would have done as the Norsemen did, use their fallen enemies weapons against them. Case in point? Check the movie "The 13th Warrior". Now, granted, some of that armor and weapons are from much later times (the Elizabethan helmet comes to mind). That being said, it cost a small fortune at least to get a good weapon or piece of armor.
