Tribal classifications of the Southwest Culture area:
Agrarian tribes
- Pueblo (western: Hopi, Zuni. Rio Grande: Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa)
- Desert (upland Yuman-speaking tribes: Hualapai, Havasupai, Yavapai. River Yumans: Mojave, Yuma, Cocopa, Maricopa. Uto-Aztecan speakers: Pimas, Papagos).
Nomadic tribes
- Athapascans (Apache, Navahos -- the latter eventually settled down)
- Southwestern Texas and Mexico tribes (Karankawa, Coahuiltec, Seri).
Ancestors:
The Mogollon seem to have been the ancestors of the Zuni.
The Anasazi seem to have been the ancestors of the Hopi and the Rio Grande Pueblo tribes.
The Patayan seem to have been the ancestors of the Yuman.
The Hohokam seem to have been the ancestors of the Pima and Papago.
The Navaho and Apache are relative latecomers to the region (ca. 900 AD).
