Greetings, my friends!
I was just reading the posts about housing - my favorite subject - and I thought you might like to take a closer look at a typical insula:

As a bonus, you'll find that this picture also shows sewer and water supply structure running under the street. The first floor,in this case occupied by shops, apparently had enough height to also house the shopkeeper's appartment.
