The Shogun had established a university at Yushima Confucian Hall in Edo. The idea was to get a handful of schoolmasters who would teach people about Confucian loyalty and good manners. Those graduates were supposed to go back to their homes and set up academies in their natal districts. But things did not go on so smoothly. Some of them became literati, they were interested in Art, Philosophy and Literature. They studied ancient Shinto. They traveled constantly exchanging ideas and poems. They published books denouncing the Shogun and they surely influenced the fall of the Shongunat.
