right, couple of things:

A) The concentration of Epona dedications and representations along the Rhine-Danube Limes and on Hadrians Wall make it clear that Epona was strongly associated with 2nd to 3rd centure Roman troops, primarily the cavalry of course.
okay i just looked this up - we got the cohors II Delmatarum equitata at Cavoran in the third century, (RIB1795 - which i am assuming is the dedication to Epona also, not having a copy of RIB nearby) and the cohors I Delmatarum equitata at Maryport, where i presume the depiction of epona is related to their presence (although i just noted we also got the cohors I hispanorium millaria equitata there under hadrian so that my blow my theory). I really very bad on my military units here, so where do these units originate, and out of interest does the spread of Epona artifact mirror the movements or a select number of units, or is it cavalry from all over the show?
okay and secondly
B [3.27] I noticed a little shrine of the Mare-headed Mother, the Goddess Epona, standing in a niche of the post that supported the main beam of the stable. It was wreathed with freshly gathered roses, the very antidote that I needed.
The one line in this quote that grabbed me was "Mare-headed Mother" - have any such literal depictions been found, or is she always in the forms you described earlier? COz i would REALLY be interested in that sort of depiction especially if appearing more western Empire way!
Thanks!
