This is just my own thought about the question. I see genuine magic to be a spiritual faculty inherent in every human being.

Religion is both orthodox, and esoteric. The orthodox is the accepted outward display_pagenty, ritual, dogma, etc. It is basicly organizational. It is worldly.

The esoteric aspect is the spiritual element. This has more to do with individual development. It is more a natural phenomena and is part of the human experience, but is subject to the individual, not an organization. It is unworldly, and subject to the ever constant play of light and shadow.

This is a very off the cuff answere. It deserves better. It is of course based upon my own search for spiritual growth and truth.

Religion often becomes a social and civic duty. The mystical element can be very much lost. The mystical experience is one of recepticity. Some cultures venerate it others deplore it. Yet, there it is a part of the human experience and condition.
