    The placing of a cockeral, a dog etc was reserved for Patricides (murder of father).

    Vestal Virgins were locked in an underground chamber with a candle and some water and left to starve to death.

    I understand that this form of punishment was for the worst of crimes, the breaking of thier vows. If thier lover was caught, he had a far more painful execution, but I cannot remember what exactly.
