Nantonos, I can only comment on W. Herwig and M. Todd: Both are really worth reading. Herwig has got a very "German" point of view, purified from all the nationalist and chauvinist opinions of his predecessors, while Todd is thoroughly British. :o)

Here's a small collection of useful reads from scratch:

    • Wilhelm Grønbech, Vor Folkært i Oldtiden. Kopenhagen 1909/1912.
dt. Kultur und Religion der Germanen. Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, Darmstadt 1987
engl. The Culture of the Teutons. 1931.
    • Bruno Krüger (Hg.), Die Germanen. Ein Handbuch. Band 1: Von den Anfängen bis zum 2.Jh.u.Z. Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft, Darmstadt 1988.
    • Wolfram Herwig, Die Germanen. C.H. Beck, München 1995 ff.
    • Allan A. Lund, Die ersten Germanen. Ethnizität und Ethnogenese. C. Winter, Heidelberg 1998 (out of print!)
    • Hans-Joachim Schalles, Thomas Grünewald (Hg.), Germania inferior. DeGruyter, Berlin/N.Y. 2000 (horribly expensive - it's a real deGruyter!)
    • Heinrich Beck, Heiko Steuer, Dieter Timpe, Johannes Hoops (Hg.), Germanen, Germania, Germanische Altertumskunde (Sonderdruck der RGA). DeGruyter, Berlin/N.Y. 1998
    • Heinrich Beck (Hg.), Germanenprobleme in heutiger Sicht. DeGruyter, Berlin/N.Y. 1999
    • Walter Pohl, Die Germanen. HC Oldenbourg Verlag, München 2000
      PB Oldenbourg Verlag, München 2000
    • Rolf Hachmann, Die Germanen. W. Heyne Verlag, München 1982 (out of print)

Less academic still quite useful as an introduction:

    • Siegfried Fischer-Fabian, Die ersten Deutschen. Der Bericht über das rätselhafte Volk der Germanen. Lübbe Verlag, Bergisch-Gladbach 2003 (reprint, paperback)
