Philppus Aureolus Paracelcus_1493?-1541
Swiss physician, alchemist, and chemist. He traveled widely, acquireing knowledge of alchemy, chemistry, and mettalurgy. Although his egotism earned him the enemity of learned men of the day he gained great reknown. He practiced medicine and lectured in many cities. He died in Salzburg where a monument was errected to him. His inflence was great on suceeding centuries. His learning was colored by many fantastical philosophies, He opposed the humoral theory of disease and taught the use of specific remidies. He introduced new medicines_ opium, mercury, sulphur, iron, and arsenic. He was the author of numerous medical and occult works.
