At my stage in life, this book is very tame. It is not the violence, it is that the novelty that is gone. I found myself falling asleep many times while reading this. If I were reading the series as one complete thing, by now I would be bored. This is not meant criticly. I still really enjoy these books and find the concept delightful.
Small children might find them scary. That may be why they like them. If anything really bad happened to Harry, that he could not overcome, that woul really be the pits.
I remember the first cartoon motion picturce that I ever saw as a small child. Little Lulu was run over by a cement truck. It flattened her completely out! She then popped right back up! It did not matter, this was terrifying. My sisters had to remove me from the theatre, and were upset because they missed the rest of the show.
