    May I suggest "Sister Carrie" by Theodore Dreiser as an introduction to his works?

    I read it a long time ago but it is one of those books that stays forever in the mind, superbly written.

    Another of his outstanding novels is "An American Tragedy" - and you may have seen the excellent 1951 movie it inspired, "A place in the sun".
