From the New York Post, January 20, 2003: A short article discovered on a piece of papyrus in the basement of a Vienna museum describes a recipe for toothpaste:

Powder for white and perfect teeth, which when mixed with saliva forms a clean toothpaste. The ingredients: rock salt, dried iris flower and pepper crushed and mixed together. Dentists have recently discovered the beneficial properties of the iris, which has been found effective against gum disease and is ow in commercial use again.
