Humanism freed humankind from many bonds, including the medieval church's belief in the wickedness of astrology. The ancient symbols of the months of the zodiac appeared in frescoes at PALAZZO SCHIEFANOIA. They were painted by Cossa and other artists about 1470. This was probably the most important cycle of secular painting done durring the Renaissance.

The bands divide each fresco. At the top the mythological gods and goddesses preside. Borso d'Este is the prince who commissioned the frescoes.
