Who would have thought it? And in the Louvre, too! Why haven't we heard of it before? I've got a notion why, tho. After clicking on the Louvre link and the enlarge button, even allowing for this fresco being damaged, it seems way under par for Botticelli.
The two Louvre people who wrote the blurbs tried to hype it up as best they could, but came up rather empty-handed, I feel. Lots of vague talk about "A Neoplatonic visual repertoire," but as the old lady used to say in the TV ad, "Where's the meat?" They say that because we can't figure out what Venus is giving her (a rose? some crab-like creature?), that the gift itself is "immaterial," it's the spirit of giving that counts. And they describe the bride in most unflattering terms, as if she's catatonic, because she doesn't seem to be looking at Venus or the 3 Graces. C+ at best, Botticelli!
