It was nice to have a relaxing day away from the road. After the previous day of thunderstorms it was nice to have a day of sunshine with everyone and anyone being out and about. As it turned out today was the ninth day, the nundinae. It was the day when the markets provided the largest variety and the freshest foods. Those merchants living closest to any city generally produced the fruits and vegeables while farmers living further from town tended to produce less perishable goods such as sausages, honey and cheese. Popular items go quickly at top price but for the shopper who likes to get a bargain he can wait till the end of the day and whatever items are left the farmer is usually willing to let them go for a rock bottom price rather than having to haul the unsold goods home again. With some good food and some good wine in their bellies Sextus and Idris were filling quite content. Even the usually pesky Hermes was being cooperative! Sextus had wanted to ask Idris if he would mind spending another day here in Salernum but he knew that his friend didn't like to stay in one spot too long. By late afternoon they were on the road again.
