"The die is cast." Hazard was a dice game. It is a word of Arab origin , al meaning "the" and zahr meaning "die." But since the cast of the die is uncertain, the Arab word al-zahr came into Spanish as azar which means "an unexpected accident" Hazard then entered French as hasard, English as hazard. Hazard is still a dice game similiar to the game of craps in the United States, but it also means exposure to the chance of loss or injury.
