Caius Aemilius Catulus had barely had time to hear Merula and Macro report upon the less than spectacular engagement at the Nympheaum pass, when one of the advance scouts sent by Macro to scout out the terrain near Lissus, came riding toward Catulus, clearly winded. Within moments he was upon the three commanders.
"Sir," He spoke to Catulus from his horse "there is a large hoplite army just over the next hill. They look to be about three-thousand strong. Not much support though. What's left of the enemy cavalry seems to be in retreat, but there are still a very few slingers"
Catulus nodded sharply, and then turned to his subordinates.
"Alright, then, this is it. Pass the word down the line; prepare for battle!"
*************************************************************
My forces are to prepare immediately for battle. They are to form into three lines of equal size with a reserve force in back of roughly 600 men. The right wing will attempt to move around the opponent’s left, and attack from the rear. The left wing will be prepared to repel cavalry but will also advance, while the center wing will advance forward. The reserves will support the left wing or guard against any attacks to the center. What is left of my archers will be positioned behind all three lines and will bombard the enemy. All soldiers will use Pila at the necessary range as the enemy advances, and then engage with swords. My cavalry forces will remain with the right wing, and help to break the enemy line.
My artillery should arrive about halfway through this battle and will immediately set up and begin bombarding the enemy from locations predetermined by the main force.
