you have to know your Aussie beers as well as the general pub lingo. Some great beers to try out include Coopers Ale, Tooheys Old and New, Cascade lager, VB (Victorian Bitter), XXXX (pronounced 4X), Boags Draught, Crown lager, Emu Bitter, Swan Draught and if you're really desperate then try Fosters *cringes*. Fosters mate, is one of the worst for causing hangovers and thats probably why we mostly sell and market it overseas and keep the good amber fluid for ourselves. LOL.
Knowing what to say at a pub is definitely a bonus! Never say "its my shout", unless you mean to buy a round of drinks. But pub ettiquitte is usually such that mates take turns shouting! "Mate" is also the most handy byword you could ever use especially after knocking back a few when people's names vanish into the foggy areas of the brain. It could also help in avoiding brawls.
A shandy is a beer mixed with lemonade and may be offered to the ladies, but is definitely not a blokes drink.. Beer sizes include midis, schooners, glasses, pots and pints depending on which state you're crawling around in and in most places you can always get a big jug of beer if you're super thirsty. But the best thing about Aussie beer is that its always cold straight out of the tap and as a general rule of thumb one beer here is about the equivalent strength of drinking 3-4 American beers in one glass. Cheers!
