One of my interests is Germanic and Scandinavian seafaring.
The Hanseatic League is believed to have had its beginnings in 1159, although its origins cannot be dated exactly. This merchant alliance was well armed and protected trade routes in the Baltic and North Seas. The Hanseatic free imperial cities were aligned with the Holy Roman Emperor. The cities shared strategic locations along trade routes. This "trade guild" reached the height of its power in the late 1300s, the merchants of the Hanseatic League succeeded in using their economic clout and sometimes their military might to influence imperial policies.
