Have any of you read "The Red Tent" by Anita Diamant? Many of the women of my church have been entranced by this book, and with the empowerment it give to a female view of the biblical stories. I can see what they appreciate about the book, but personally I found myself more and more offended by its treatment of the men. I am curious how others view it.
And I'd like to add my support for the recommendation of "In His Steps." Many years ago, after reading this book, I suggested in a bible study that we all spend the next week (only a week!) stopping to ask ourselves this question. The study leader cut me off immediately saying that Jesus is God and that what he can do as God, and what we can do as humans are not the same thing. This is a dangerous thing to do.
As if following Jesus has never before been dangerous... The study leader went on to get a doctor of divinity and is a minister now, by the way. I wonder if he ever changed his thinking on that. Probably not...
While a decision Jesus might have made (for example to heal a person) is a decision we might not be capable of making, anytime we stop and think before we act, it can't hurt!
