The five entered teams have lined up at their respective stalls, the horses neighing nervously. The crowd's usual raucous celebrations have lowered to barely a murmur as the Aedile holding the games, L. Valerius Flaccus, stepped out onto the track.

Sensing that the population would not long observe the sacred nature of the auguries, Flaccus hastily conducted them, finding them satisfactory. With a brusque wave, he signaled to the trumpeters around the arena to blow the ready signal.

The hushed crowd fell dead silent until, at last, the trumpeters all blazed out a single note. The stall doors were lifted by pulleys, and the five chariot teams rushed out to commence the race!
