'Camelus dromedarius.'
Information on the history of camels in Egypt is contradictory. Camels have been known in Egypt probably since the beginning of the 2nd millennium BCE, but there is very little evidence of their existence as beasts of burden. Camel bones found recently in the North West Faiyoum indicate the animal existed in that area in small numbers as early as the 19th Dynasty.
The established school of thought is the Persian invasion of Egypt under Cambyses (re)introduced domesticated camels in large numbers in the 5th century BCE.
