    In the First Crusade only about 3000 knights set out from Constantinople, of whom probably less than half were present at the start of Jerusalem's seige, together with about 12,000 infantry. Once campaigning was over many returned home and there were probably only about 500 available for Jerusalem's defence and the pilgrim routes leading to it.
