For anyone who thinks that the collapse of the western Empire wasn't a bad thing, I suppose you could make a list of all the great medical, sanitary, intellectual, engineering, and other benefits of civilization that disappeared 'round 600 AD and had to be discovered all over again some 1300 years later. I wonder how many generations that is who, literally, had to live with blindness?
