Both the Haiku and Senryu are historical poetical forms in Japanese literary culture. Most people and poets are well versed in the haiku and its structure of 17 syllables 5-7-5. But what of the Senryu? It is similar in format, also 17 syllables arranged as 5-7-5... so what is the difference? It is mainly a difference in subject; the haiku traditionally explores themes of nature and environment, the senryu deals specifically with observed human actions and nature. Here is one of my haiku's:
Warm thermals rising,
Soaring red-tailed hawk, spirals...
On a basking snake.
And here, for comparison is my interpretation of a senryu:
Woman seeks handsome
Englishman, a non-smoker...
But must be on fire!
Thanks for your attention (and I always invite comments and criticism!)
