This episode was sooo entertaining. The writers of the show have strayed a bit from historical accuracy, but I think the show has made up for it in the realism they portray. This show actually makes me feel as though I were seeing the REAL city of ancient Rome and not just a reproduction of it.
I love the contrasts between the classes as we see Atia prepare for her grossly expensive party and elite guest list- while Vorenus and Niobe prepare for a more humble and modest gathering. (Also- Vorenus was adorable with a wreath of flowers and herbs on his head!! Rewatching that still makes me laugh) The parties were very well directed. It was great of them to include a scene that illustrates how 'bribes' were not acceptable but 'gifts' were very common- and winning the favor of the gods was only a matter of finances. I was also very pleased that the writers addressed Caesar's epilepsy and rumors of a sexual relationship between him and Octavian.
But my favorite part was seeing Pullo as he returns to the Aventine (As Quintus and his men are threatening Vorenus and Niobe) Shouting joyously and throwing coins to the streets; while Eirene smiles excitedly, wearing her new dress and jewels. The look on Vorenus' face was priceless. I love these characters and this episode is probably my favorite of all...
