I know, I know - one should always start with the history, THEN read the fiction based on the history. Plus, this book may have been recommended elsewhere. But I must say, a book that got me very interested in Attila and some of the legends that surround him is a purely fictional account by William Dietrich called, appropriately, The Scourge of God. As far as my rather limited knowledge goes, it tells you a tale based on the writings of Priscus at the court of Attila and ends with the Battle of Chalons.
