Those of you who may have recently visited the Art Gallery in Yoshiwara, Edo (yeah, yeah, I know, shameless plug :p) may have seen this 19th century woodblock print: I thought it would be neat to have close-ups and translations located here....

Edo jidai daimyo Translation (from top to bottom)

    Naga-kamishimo: long kamishimo (samurai costume)
Daimyo, Edo jidai: Daimyo, Edo period

Kataginu: kataginu (sleeveless jacket with exaggerated shoulders)
    Kosode: short-sleeved kimono
    Chiisa-gatana: short sword
    Ougi: folding fan
Naga-bakama: long hakama (long pleated garnment)

Additional information: this is the clothes high-rank samurais are expected to wear when they visit the shogun's court. The hakama, which usually stops at the ankles, is longer so as to prevent fast movement, and thus surprise attacks on the person of the shogun

Edo jidai lady Translation (from top to bottom)

    Uchikake: uchikake (very formal kimono)
Daimyo himegimi, Edo Jidai: daughter of daimyo, Edo period

    Kougai: hairpin
Uchikake: uchikake (very formal, long kimono worn untied)
    Hakoseko: purse
Obi: obi (a sash to tie the kimono)
    Aigi: between-season clothes
    Shitagi: underwear

Additional information: the uchikake is hardly ever used outside marriage ceremonies today
