ok, don't laugh, but there's a children's writer named Eoin Colfer, who I think is brilliant.
Now, Mr. Colfer has written a series of books, Artemis Fowl, so far 4 books in the series.

No synopsis from me, get them and read them, you'll enjoy them immensly.
If you have kids, they'll be begging you for 5 chapters at bedtime, mark my words!!!
