I have deleted the table added to the thread as it was obviously confusing more than one person.
So I have made a new list of suggestions, adding mine as well as a few from volunteers and an explanation why names were chosen and how.
If anyone has anymore questions, by all means ask.
I am not opposed to talking things out and explaining my point of view. Although I hope that this post gives a clear idea of how and what I think.
So...
The modern names are in parenthesis are there to give you an idea of where the areas are located, not as a name proposed to be used.
- Rogaland (Norwegian district in rl)
Old Norse name: Nóregr (Norway)
Districts: Bergen, Ostfold,
- Svealand (Middle Sweden)
Districts: Birka, Helgö
- Geatland (South Sweden)
Districts: Skedemosse, Kärringsjön, Gotland
- Jylland (Denmark)
Districts: Illerup, Trelleborg, Hedeby, Jelling, Hodde
- Lýõveldiõ Island (Iceland)
Districts: Brattahlid, Thingvalla
- Österland (Finland)
Districts: Turku, Porvoo, Tuonela, Väinölä, Kyöpelinvuori, Pohjola
Turku or Porvoo, they are medieval cities.
Kyöpelinvuori is known as the place where women who die as virgins go. Also the place where the Easter witches are said to live now.
Tuonela, the Underworld;
Pohjola,belongs to Kalevala (Lapland)
Väinölä (home of Väinämöinen, and can be used to mean main place of Kalevala, ie. Home of the Heroes).
Although Österland is too "Swedish" and Finland is too modern, so perhaps Kalevala could be used instead, although it is too mythic, on the other hand we do have Yggdrasil already so why not.
- Vinland (North America)
Districts: Baffin Island, Markland, Newfoundland
- Islands: (realm)
Districts: Jarlshof (Scotland), Dublin (Ireland), Faroes Islands (to be added)
I can also see Gotland as a realm in itself, as it history is rather special and it has been ruled by Danish law under a long time, it would then look something like this:
- Gotland
Districts: Visby, Tingstäde, a few more to be added later.
If this is not a workable solution under this circumstances Gotland can also be added to “Denmark” making Jylland look like this:
- Jylland (Denmark)
Districts: Illerup, Trelleborg, Hedeby, Jelling, Hodde, Gotland
Sorry but I cannot find better names other then Svea- and Geat-land, if we go as far back in history as we can they used to be two distinctly different states back then, ruled by different kings.
If anyone has better suggestions for realm names I'm fine using what ever they are, like Corny's suggestion for "Denmark" called "Land of the Danes".
So if anyone else has better name suggestions by all means do offer them, same goes for the realm called Islands.
I have also chosen cities based on archaeological as well as historical record, so there will be plenty to write about, as well as a little fiction based on sagas, like Beowulf and the Geatland wars.
The main names of districts and all the info I have on them come from a book called Arkeologi i Norden by Göran Burenhult (red)
Red= mean that it was a series of authors working on the project not just Göran.
As for the realm names:
I have used dictionaries to find names for them.
Swedish-English
Swedish-Norse
Swedish-Danish
Swedish-Norwegian
Swedish-Icelandic
As well as Nationalencyklopedin.
Which btw is one to the most well known and used series of encyclopaedias in Sweden.
As we have very few hoods and very little activity in the ones that we do have it is a pity that we cannot work in this and have everyone be somewhat content. Let’s face it no one person will be completely happy about all this, it is after all a compromise.
The changes will also not be made by one person alone but as an agreement based on the majority of people’s choice, who will hopefully also like the idea of helping build the hoods.
