From the north came the Chichimecs, the people of the Dog Lineage. About 900 AD came Mixcoatl and Mexico's first dynasty.

His followers absorbed the civilized ways of the region and built the spendid capital of Tula. They established the Toltec Empire. Toltec became a synonym for the civilized person.

In 987 Mixcoatl's son, Quetzcoatl took the throne. This priest-king brought the art of metallurgy, a new calendar, and the gentle god, the Feathered Serpent, whose name he bore. Tula's streets were lined with palaces of turquoise and shell. Through them flashed birds of magnificent plumage. Gigantic corn and squash were raised. Multihued cotton grew in the fields.

Quetzalcoatl was credited with banishing war, bribery, even death itself! When he attempted to outlaw human sacrifice, the followers of the angry god Tezcatlipoca rose up and overthrew him.

He lived on in legend as a god to many people. His succesors at Tula were plagued with forrest fire, drought, and new barbarian invasions.

In 1168 the brilliant city of Tula was destroyed, in a cival war so furrious that it's name and location were obliterated for over 800 years.

"Many pretty flowers, red, blue, and yellow; we say to the girls, "Let's go and walk among the flowers."

The wind comes and sways the flowers, the girls are like that when they dance; some are wide open, large flowers. The birds love the sunshine and the starlight; the flowers smell sweet.

The girls are sweeter than the flowers.
