Welcome honourable guests to my humble teiko tanka. *bows, smiles, pours tea*
Teiko is a Japanese word for houseboat and tanka literally means short poem or short song.
In ancient Japan, it was customary for lovers to exchange waka (poetry), rather than prose. The tanka became popular during the Heian period (794-1185 A.D.) and eclipsed all other poetic styles.
