An Scol je Ar Canin (An Sgoil de Ar Canain)
The School of Our Language. The School of Gaidhlig. Scottish Gaelic is a dying language, and must be revived. In my opinion, one of the first off-putting parts of our language is the fact that its written so unphonetically. I've created a much easier phonetic way to write Scottish Gaelic and will use it in combination with lessons and such to help ar axym folum ar canin! (our people learn our language)...agys sampi ely or so oowar! (and anyone else for that matter!)

The first topic I have to start off with is how to pronounce my new script. Its easy and phonetic and hopefully should be MUCH easier than learning how to read Gaidhlig in the normal fashion. It took me a month or so of average semi-daily reading to learn how to decypher the sounds. With that out of the way, the only problem is memorization.

All vowels and consonants are pronounced like spanish, except for a few soley scottish exceptions.

s - all \"s\"es are pronounced like \"sh\" except when they finish a word. Sampi (any) sounds like shampee.
y - \"y\" never sounds like \"ee\" as in english, I had to use this letter because there\'s no sound for it in english. Its the \"uhh\" in \"hut\" or the \"uhh\" in \"luck\".
oo - this sound is a problem. It\'s like a combination of \"uh\" and \"oh\", just say \"oh\" without rounding the lips. They should look more like ovals. Its a lot like the german pronunciation of \"oe\"
uu - this sound is also a problem. Its the equivalent of oo except with a \"u\". Make the \"oo\" sound and instead of sounding an \"oh\" sound an \"uh\". OR say oodles without rounding your lips.
x - this is the \"ch\" of english, I had to use it because the \"ch\" is already \"kh\" in gaidhlig.
ch - like the \"ch\" in Loch or Bach.

Beginning Letters

Because scottish gaelic sometimes changes the sounds of the first letters, and it is neccessary to know what they used to be, I\'ve kept the lenition system. It goes as such... (these letters are only pronounced like this at the beginning of a word)

d - d dh - y
t - t th - h
f - f fh - h
g - k gh - y
c - k ch - kh
m - m mh - v
b - p bh - v
p - p ph - f
s - sh sh - s

See! Thats much easier than a month of intensive checking and such.

loch - lokh - lake
axym - achuhm - people
smuunachi - shmuhnakhee - to think
oowar - ohwar - matter
agys - aguhs - and
mo chanin - mow khanihn - my language

Ha galic canin mhor!
Gaelic is a great language!
