The Bark Canoe Trading Post

Birchbark canoes are most commonly associated with Native Americans of northern New England regions. The canoes ranged in length between 10 and 24 feet. The birch bark canoe is constructed from three materials. The gunwales, ribs and planking are split from northern white cedar, which is resistant to rot. The skin is bark from the paper birch. Black spruce roots are used to sew the canoe together. The roots are peeled and split to make lacing.
