Eridu
Eridu (or Eridug) was the seat of the Sumerian water god and god of wisdom, Ea/Enki. It is thought to be the oldest city of Sumer and was built near a mound called, Abu Shahrain. It was one of the first five cities before the flood and is believed (through carbon dating) to have been founded around 5000 BC. Eridu was occupied up until about 600 BC, then forsaken due to politics of the time.
Eridu lies 196 miles southeast of Baghdad, Iraq and seven miles south of Ur. It was most likely founded close to the Persian Gulf near the mouth of the Euphrates river. But, due to the accumulation of silt at the shoreline over the millennia, the remains of the city are now some distance from the gulf.
In the Sumerian king list, Eridu is named as the city of the first kings:
After the kingship descended from heaven, the kingship was in Eridug. In Eridug, Alulim became king; he ruled for 28800 years. Alaljar ruled for 36000 years. 2 kings; they ruled for 64800 years. Then Eridug fell and the kingship was taken to Bad-tibira.
