The Cyclades
General Urbs
Historical BackgroundThere are approximately 220 islands which form the Cyclades island group located in the southwestern Aegean Sea, east of Attica and the Peloponnesus.
Cyclades signifies "circular" as the islands have a somewhat round configuration surrounding the group's focal island Delos. Female statues carved from the islands' white marble were created by the Cycladic civilization, which flourished here during the Neolithic and Bronze ages. The rise of the Minoan culture to the south on Crete, however, led to a decline in the importance of the Cyclades, with the exception of Delos. While the majority of the islands feature poor soils, they support the growth of wine grapes, fruits, wheat, tobacco, and olive oil. Sources
