Midgard
Historical Urbs
Midgard, or in Old Norse, Miðgarðr, refers to the world of men, or this earth. It is the place of man's habitation at the centre of the world tree Yggdrasil, and is connected to Asgard by the bifrost bridge which is guarded by Heimdall. Initially it was created from the flesh and blood of the giant Ymir, with the flesh becoming the land and the blood the oceans. According to Norse mythology, Miðgarðr also became associated with the wall around the world that the gods constructed using the eyebrows of the giant Ymir as a defense against the Jotuns who lived in Jotunheim, to the west of Mannheim, the home of men. At the time of Ragnarök the world of men will be destroyed when the last battle will take place on the plain of Vígríðr. The earth will then sink into the sea as the great sea serpent Jörmungandr rises from the ocean and poisons the land and sea with his venom.
