Asgard
Historical Urbs 5 Featured July 3 , 2008
The home of the Aesir. Protected by an inpenetrable wall, the gods' home may only be reached by way of the rainbow bridge, which is guarded by Heimdall.

Within Asgard can be found the many halls of the Aesir, the warlike and powerful gods of Norse mythology.

By far the most well known hall of Asgard is Valhalla , the Hall of the slain, where the Valkyries carry the chosen slain of mankind to the presence of Odin and Freyja, allowing them to feast and fight uninterrupted until the great battle of Ragnarok.

The protective walls of Asgard were built by the giant Hrimthurs on a wager between him and the Aesir. Hrimthurs said he could build the wall within a single winter if the Aesir would give him the sun and the moon and the vanir goddess Freyja. Loki distracted Svadilfari the horse that Hrimthurs used to haul and place the stone and he was unable to complete the task. From this distraction the famous steed of Odin, Sleipner, was born.

Besides the more well known halls of Asgard, these halls can also be found there: Gladsheim, the great council hall of the Aesir and the inner sanctuary of Asgard, Himinbiorg the hall of Heimdall, watchman of the gods; Thrudvangar the dwelling of Thor & his wife Sif; and Hlidiskialf the throne room of Odin, the all father, upon which he oversees the whole of the creation.
