A tribute by a Gotland trader by the name of Grani in memory of his friend and comrade Karl marks the Viking presence in the region.

At the mouth of the Dneiper, the Viking presence on Berezany island is marked by a single Runestone. A tribute by a Gotland trader by the name of Grani in memory of his friend and comrade Karl. In its heyday, Berezany would have seen merchant traffic daily as Viking raiders and traders travelled up and down the Dnieper in their sometimes fragile relationship with Constantinople which was known to the Vikings as Miklagard. These traders soon became the personal body guard of the rulers of Constantinople, the famed Varangian Guard, whose exploits and feats made history.
