Duchy of Bavaria

Bavaria’s earliest known inhabitants were probably Celts under Roman control during the pre-Christian era. Christianity was first introduced to the region by the Romans then later furthered by the efforts of several “missionary bishops." The Franks introduced the Bavarian name in 520 by including them on a “list of peoples.” 6th century bureaucrat turned historian, Jordanes makes mention of the Bavarians in his The Origin and Deeds of the Goths, a summary published in 551 of twelve lost volumes of history originally compiled by Flavius Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus, a Roman senator.

The Franks eventually gained control of Bavaria and appointed a duke, most likely Garibald I of the Agilolfing family, as its administrator sometime near 550. Agilolfing dukes held the position until 788. Bavaria briefly gained independence from the Franks in 717 but was brought firmly to heel by Charles “The Hammer” Martel and kept there by his son and grandson, Pippin the Short and Charlemagne respectively. In 788, after an insubordinate Duke Tassilo III resisted Frankish rule, Charlemagne annexed Bavaria, and gave control of its administration to his brother in law Gerold. Upon Gerold’s death in 799, the Frankish counts stepped in and Bavaria was “assimilated” into the Carolingian empire.
