Egypt's Sepat of...
Upper: The Sceptre
General Region

The Sceptre sepat is Upper Egypt’s the fourth administritive district. It takes it's name from the was sceptre, an object with connotations of power, prosperity and well-being. The sepat's capital Waset derives its name from this.

It is thought that the was sceptre may have originally been a totemic or fetish object with a stylised animal head as is suggested by its shape. Whatever it's origins, it's primary function when buried with the dead was to ensure the continued well-being of the deceased. It seems appropriate that a city preoccupied with death and eternal life, as was the case with Waset, should adopt the name of such an object.

Other cities within the nome include:

  • Perhathor (Gk. Pathyris)
  • Iuny (Gk. Hermonthis)
  • Imiotru
  • Djerty
