The harbor is the commercial heart of Halicarnassus. In the days when the Greeks and Carians lived separately, this is where they would meet to do business. And after Mausolus built Halicarnassus into an important capital, ships from all over the eastern Mediterranean would stop here to trade. The agora lies right next to the harbor, making it easy for imported goods to go quickly on sale. Besides the many docks and berths for the ships, there are also ship-sheds, where ships are built and equipped.
