Create a new City in Kingdom of the Gepids

Kingdom of the Gepids's District of
Belgrade
District Leader: Position is currently vacant
Gepids, Avars
The territory around Belgrade has been inhabited by a large variety of peoples for at least 7,000 years. Each different ruling people left it’s mark on the culture of the area. In about 600 BC Thracian and Scythian tribes were known to wander the area. In the early 3rd century BC the town of Singidunum was established by the Scordisci; a Celtic tribe of Eastern Europe.

During the 1st century, Singidunum was captured by the Romans. It experienced its golden age as a center of communication and as a strategic city for Roman interests in Eastern Europe. Veteran Roman soldiers were encouraged to settle in the area adding additional security to the city and countryside where they settled. The spiritual tradition of the area was of Celtic origin, but was also influenced by Roman culture.

Singidunum’s importance continued past the age of the Roman Empire, serving as a center of communication for the Byzantine Empire as well. Invasions were frequent from the 5th to 7th centuries by the Ostrogoths, Gepids, Sarmatians, Avars, and Slavs. The Slavs eventually settled in Singidunum during the 7th century and renamed the town Beligrad which means “white town”. Peace was a distant wish for Beligrad as the rule of the area changed between the Bulgarians, Byzantinians, and Hungarians during the 9th through 11th centuries. With Samuilo of Macedonia came rule by Byzantium again and Beligrad became an important stronghold of the empire.
