Charlemagne spent most winters between 800 AD and his death fourteen years later in Aachen in order to enjoy the hot springs.
The thermal springs at Aachen have attracted people back to prehistoric times. The Romans named the hot sulphur springs there Aquis-Granum. Never a large settlement, the records next tell us about Aachen in the late eighth century, when a royal estate was established there.
Aachen gained its importance during the time of Charlemagne. In 786 AD the construction of a great palace there was begun. Charlemagne spent most winters between 800 AD and his death fourteen years later at Aachen in order to enjoy the hot springs. The grand chapel became Aachen Cathedral, and is the oldest cathedral in northern Europe, where Charlemagne's tomb rests today. Aachen is located in the westernmost point of Germany at the borders of Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
