Limnai History
![]() Limnai (Limnae) was one of the 5 villages that founded Sparta. The name of the 5th village is unknown, however, more recent claims have been made saying it's Amyklai. The villages were located along the banks of the Eurotas River, and became unified around 775 B.C. The Temple of Artemis Orthia in Sparta, Limnaion, was located in and named for Limnai, and was once the center of Spartan religion. It was here that boys became men through a ritual of being flogged on the temple steps until their flesh was torn to bleeding ribbons. The Romans, of course, saw this as a great tourist attraction, and after reviving the custom they built theatre seating in front of the temple to watch.
