Pitane History
![]() Pitane (Pitana) was one of the 5 villages that founded Sparta. The name of the 5th village is unknown, however, more recent claims have been made saying it's Amyklai. The villages were located along the banks of the Eurotas River, and became unified around 775 B.C. The village was named for the Naiad Nymph who lived there, and was loved by Poseidon. Pitane, the Naiad Nymph, was the daughter of the river god Eurotas, and by Poseidon, she became the mother of Evadne. Nymphs were once worshipped in Pitane, but eventually this worship was replaced by the cult of Helen. Source Material:
