Tusculum was situated on an oblong, narrow hill running east-west, some 3000 feet long. The acropolis was situated in the eastern end of the hill, with a fine Roman theatre at its foot; then the Forum; then, in the extreme western edge of the town, the amphitheatre.

The main street of Tusculum, the Via Tecta, centered on the Forum and the road from Rome and parts north entered the town from the northern end of the Forum. Here were the municipal buildings, the shops, and the market place of the village.
