Originally a monastic settlement for monks, Cork was founded by the Christian bishop St Finnbar in the 6th century. It was also considered to be one of the places used on the extensive viking trade routes. Yet it was also victim to the raiding and pillaging of the Northmen and over the centuries, the city had been ruined, sacked and rebuilt.
The medieval period brought with it interesting architecture with the red abbey still surviving to modern times. Much of the architecture that is left is of the Georgian style that came after the end of the middle ages between the years 1720 and 1840. |
