I was away camping this past weekend. Last night, the campground practically adjoining ours was awash in noise, commentary, and a bunch of other things not conducive to sleep. So, I plugged in the wax earplugs but TIGHT.
This morning.. when lightness just begins to flavor the air... I hear, through my earplugs, something or someone calling my name. I take a moment, and I really do recognize the voice. [Someone who is NOT there, but who does know me well and has my best interests at heart!]
I laze about five minutes more, but the urgency of that tone of voice gets to me. I pull out the earplugs, and begin to pack to leave - part of the original plan was for me to leave the campground early morning, as I have plenty of things to do at home.
I hear distant thunder.
Or is this just imagination? Our temperatures haven't been so high, and whatever I heard merely sounds like indegestion somewhere. Or maybe something wrong with a motorized vehicle? I still do want to leave; I planned to leave the camp site early in any case. I get bedding and such to the car quickly, and then, an unmistakeable sound. Thunder, that's for sure. A second time rapidly follows.
I awaken my friends in the tent next door. "Hey, guys, I think I hear thunder." They're slow in getting up, until they hear it, too.
I don't think we ever saw a faster camp break-down. I had the inadvertant head start, but they were two, and they only had the one tent, not the screen tent as well. As it was, I think we entered the finale of car-packing in a tie!
We checked weather on the way out. Intermittant weather today. So far in actuality: mostly sunny. We'll see, and I'll be alert here from home, as I dry my portion of the wet camping gear...
